Michigan fought back again, and, one final time, Nebraska had the answer in completing a sweep of their Big 10 rival.
In a weekend of scares, punches and counterpunches, the Huskers saved the biggest ones for last every time and, in so doing, sent Michigan back to Ann Arbor asking themselves what they could’ve done different. On Friday night, trailing by three, Michigan sent Lauren Putz up to the plate to face Jordy Frahm with two out in the top of the 7th inning and the bases loaded. When the count ran full and Frahm challenged her with the payoff pitch, it was Putz who swung and missed and slammed her bat while Jordy was ripping off her mask for the patented victory cry sealing a 5-2 victory.
In the first contest Saturday, Nebraska carried a 5-2 lead into the 6th inning and Michigan scored 2 in the top to cut it to 5-4. Nebraska? They answered with 3 in the bottom half for an 8-4 lead to break the Wolverines who went quietly in the top of the 7th this time.
How about today? On Saturday, in a team effort, there were three Husker heroes rose a little higher. One continued her breakout after some early struggles.
One found herself being called in from her normal position to grab the catcher’s gear for the first time in a couple of years. And one, the subject of her coach’s emotions a couple weeks previous, made the most of her opportunities exploding in joy and maybe forcing her way into some playing time. Katelyn Caneda was a two-year starter who has since moved to a reserve role on the team.
