Ludvig Åberg is carrying a three-shot lead into the final round of The Players Championship on Sunday, eyeing what would easily be the biggest win of the European Ryder Cup star’s career so far.
Åberg, after a 9-under 63 on Friday, carded a 1-under 71 on Saturday to maintain his lead over the field. At 13-under, he’ll head off in the final group alongside Michael Thorbjornsen, who rallied from his opening-round 74 to get to 10-under on the week. While a three-shot deficit isn’t an unreasonable climb, Åberg is in full control entering the final day of play just outside of Jacksonville, Florida.
Scottie Scheffler jumped up the leaderboard after yet another slow start on Saturday, too. He got to 4-under for the week after posting back-to-back rounds in the 70s in the first half of the tournament. Rory McIlroy, who was dealing with a back injury in the days leading up to the tournament, is still at 1-over.
While it would take a massive round and a bit of luck for Scheffler to actually make a move on a win this week, McIlroy is out of striking distance.
