The game was a defensive battle through much of the first period, with neither team generating many chances at the net. That was until just over three minutes to play in the period when Michigan struck first. While battling through traffic in front of the net, Garrett Schifsky snuck the puck past Penn State goaltender Josh Fleming to give the Wolverines a 1-0 advantage.

Penn State took advantage of the man advantage, with Gavin McKenna scoring the equalizer to make it 1-1 before the break. Just over five minutes into the second period, Penn State was given amother power play opportunity due to a Kienan Draper tripping call.
