Village Board Roars as Sandstoners Claim State Hockey Crown in Potsdam!

POTSDAM — The Village Board of Trustees recognized the girls Sandstoner hockey team with an official recognition of their state championship win. The Sandstoner girls won the state title Saturday, Feb. 21, over Adirondack United 3-2 at the Utica University Nexus Center.

It was the team’s first state crown in more than a decade. The village board during its March 2 meeting passed a resolution that says the Sandstoners “achieved extraordinary athletic excellence by capturing the New York State Girls Hockey Championship” and that “demonstrated exceptional teamwork, focus, resilience and competitive spirit throughout the season and through their championship victory. ” The resolution notes the team’s earlier state girls championship victories in 2009 and 2012, “further solidifying the program as a longstanding force in New York State hockey.

” The resolution gives a nod to the coaching staff for their leadership. “The championship roster, including Bailey Aldridge, Averie Bicknell, Rylie Bicknell, Sloane Bicknell, Susannah Bullard, Alexis Crites, Kennedy Colterman, Allyson Draper, Brynlee Desrosiers, Levi Forney, Lucy Frego, Lexi Haught, Hannah Law, Tessa LaSala, Addison Marcil, Avery Marcil, Sophie Manor, Sophie Merriman, Emily McCarthy, Jillian Pitts, Claire Shoen, Sophie Shoen, Jordyn Scott, Audrey Sheldon, Teagan Sheldon, Gianna Sorrento, Maddison Sorrento and Myla Thomas, displayed exceptional skill, dedication, and teamwork worthy of recognition,” the resolution reads “[T]he Village of Potsdam Board of Trustees honors and commends the Potsdam Central School Varsity Women’s Hockey Team for their outstanding achievement in winning the 2026 New York State Girls Hockey Championship, and for the pride and inspiration they bring to their school, their families and the entire Potsdam community,” it says, adding that “this resolution be entered into the official record as a testament to their hard work, perseverance and excellence in interscholastic athletics. ”
