The San Francisco 49ers traded up to take a first-round quarterback, and he's now going to be in the AFC West for another year.

The San Francisco 49ers are pretty happy with their quarterback situation, with Brock Purdy as the starter and Mac Jones as one of the top backups in the league sitting behind him. However, they lucked into this situation after trading three first-round picks and a third-round pick to the Miami Dolphins in 2021 to take North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance, who never panned out in San Francisco. On Saturday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Lance has re-signed with the Los Angeles Chargers on a one-year deal for the 2026 season.

Lance, 25, spent two seasons with the 49ers , but injuries limited him to just eight games played and four starts. He led the team to a 2-2 record while completing just 54. 9% of his passes for 797 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions.

San Francisco traded Lance to the Dallas Cowboys for a fourth-round pick (eventually used on Malik Mustapha) in 2023. In two seasons in Dallas, he played in four games and started just one, while completing 61% of his passes for 266 yards and one interception. Lance spent the 2025 season with Los Angeles, completing 47.
