New Headline: "Inside The Huddle: Eliot Wolf Reveals Strategies for Christian Gonzalez’s Patriots Triumph!
Eliot Wolf claimed that the Patriots are already preparing for cornerback Christian Gonzalez's contract extension.
New England Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf shared a short update on Pro Bowl cornerback Christian Gonzalez's contract status with the team. Gonzalez is entering the final year of his rookie contract. The Patriots hold a fifth-year option on the former first-round draft pick, which is valued at over $18 million.
They must decide whether to exercise the option by May 1, but they could also reach a long-term extension at any point with the star cornerback. Gonzalez has emerged as one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, and he will likely command a high price. With that said, the Patriots are already preparing to absorb the big hit to keep the star of their defense in New England long-term.
“It's no secret we'd like to keep Christian Gonzalez and I don't know what the timing of that is, but that's something that certainly we're preparing for," Wolf told reporters. Gonzalez was arguably the best player on the field at Super Bowl LX, and he has done more than enough to earn an extension. The Los Angeles Rams recently made Trent McDuffie the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history on a four-year, $124 million contract extension that includes $100 million in guaranteed money. There's a good chance that Gonzalez's contract could reset that market once again.
