Mar. 14—Tyler Wright felt like he was the right man for the job. When Wright was hired last summer to be the new girls basketball coach at Decatur, he was inheriting a program that had been in a slump over the last 20 years.

But Wright, who was coming from Georgia, wasn't familiar with that. All he knew was his current team had potential and he quickly learned that the program had a history of success — five state championships from 1990 to 2000. Wright, who's been named the 2026 Decatur Daily Class 5A-7A Coach of the Year, said that was all he needed to know.

"I think an outsider who had no ties, no knowledge of the area was exactly what was needed," Wright said. "When I got here and did a crash course of the history of the program, I realized that there was a history of winning championships. In my experience, if it's been done somewhere before, it can be done again, and so that's been our mindset.
