Jerry Jones' Cowboys Dominate Again!

Despite inferring things would change this offseason, Jerry Jones and the Cowboys continue to use the same bag of tricks in free agency.

Many Dallas Cowboys fans thought this offseason would be different; with the team spending more money, being more aggressive in talent acquisition. That hasn’t turned out to be the case in 2026. Through the first week and primary wave of free agency, it’s been the same old Cowboys and Jerry Jones, using the same old tricks.

Sure, the team finally broke through their $6 million ceiling they signed safety Jalen Thompson, but everything else has been from the perenially re-released Cowboys’ Guide to the Offseason handbook. It would be fine if the strategy had brought the franchise success, but after the last 13 years of building this way, it hasn’t paid off. Yet the front office continues to go down the same path, reading from the same chapters, expecting different results.

Chapter 1: Jerry Jones gives fans hope At the NFL’s combine, Jones likes to get on the big bus and hold court while talking about upcoming changes for his organization. Two years ago, he talked about being “all-in”, then the team proceeded to do very little to help Mike McCarthy in his last year in Dallas. A few weeks ago, Jones’ famous quote was about “busting the budget” and doing things the Cowboys don’t normally do in free agency.

That has again proven to be demonstrably false. The team did try to trade for edge rusher Maxx Crosby, but when that failed, they decided trading for a Rashan Gary was the move. It was a nice step in the right direction, but the Cowboys decided he was all they needed to acquire at pass rusher is a big mistake.
