He was seen as the clear favourite to follow the Big Four, expected to collect titles once they had stepped away from the game. Yet even after Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal left tennis, Zverev’s Grand Slam record hasn’t improved, despite staying near the top of the rankings.

Still, his determination to stay in the mix for major honours hasn’t gone unnoticed. His recent win has now put him in some rare company alongside a few familiar names. Zverev has now become just the fifth man to reach the semi-finals at all nine Masters 1000 events, joining Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic on that list. When asked about this achievement in his press conference, Zverev kept his response brief but was clearly proud. “Yeah, it’s very special to be one of five players in history to ever do it.

For sure, yeah, it’s something that I’m very proud of. Yeah, it’s a great thing to have in your career. ” Zverev had already made some adjustments before the season began and pointed out earlier this year when he realised he needed to change his game.
