PROVIDENCE – Sandy Gorham saw a potential path to victory but wasn’t certain if his Barrington boys would take it. The Eagles didn’t have an individual champion Saturday morning at Coleman Aquatics Center. Depth was their calling card while bringing home a third team title in five years from Brown University.

Barrington protected the lead it built into the finishing 400-yard freestyle relay and totaled 274 team points, besting runner-up Bishop Hendricken and its 262. The Hawks were looking for a third straight crown but wound up surrendering it to an Eagles team that also came out on top in 2022 and 2023. “Every kid had best times,” said Gorham, the longtime Barrington swim coach.

“It was a phenomenal meet for us – and one of the most surprising for me. ” Holden Brown, Jarett Zito and Jackson Chiappetta were the individual stars, as each senior capped a glittering career with double gold. Brown won the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly, Zito swept the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyles and Chiappetta touched first in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke.

Barrington started its march to team glory by chopping six seconds off its previous season best and closing runner-up in the opening 200-yard medley relay. Aydin Duru claimed silver in the 50-yard freestyle, and the Eagles finished second again in the 200-yard freestyle relay. They grabbed the lead for good by collecting four of the top eight places in the 100-yard breaststroke, with Roc Falaguerra taking home bronze.

“The kids thought they had a shot,” Gorham said. “And then they just swam out of their minds. It was one of the more satisfying wins I’ve ever had, because it was so unexpected.
